This morning my 10 yr old had a long awaited surgery to repair a perforated eardrum that she has had for the last 6 years. We have gone through 9 surgeries with her in the past, but this is the first big surgery. When they are young, they cry and are uncertain of what is happening before and after. When they are 10, it is a different experience.
Last night, at bedtime, I went over to her room and prayed over her. She seemed okay. She had a few questions, mostly based on what she saw on the internet about recovery.
This morning as she got her IV, she reached out and grabbed my hand. She looked at me with fear. I mouthed, "Jesus is with you." She smiled and relaxed her grip. When they wheeled her back, I kissed her and again whispered, "Jesus is with you. I love you." She seemed fine. She didn't even look back at me when I walked out. I knew, at that moment, that only through her trust in Jesus is she calm and relaxed.
When we got home, my 7 yr old showed me his courage rock. Last year, he had been struggling with fear of thunderstorms. He and my husband had found a big rock and wrote, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you." Psalm 56:3. For Ben, he needs something tangible to hold when he is afraid (along with his 2 favorite blankets). I think he showed it to me because he thought his older sister might need it. She didn't. In fact, no longer did she have to take her favorite puppy dog or blanket to comfort her. All that she needed was her Savior.
I am beginning to understand the differences in how kids handle fear based on age. Jesus is our rock. Sometimes we need to see the rock, hold the rock; other times just know the rock is there.
